Graphic Identity Manifesta 9 – Limburg, 2012

Amsterdam-based visual communication studio Thonik will be responsible for the visual identity of Manifesta 9.
In the summer of 2012, Manifesta 9 the European Biennial of Contemporary Art will be held in Genk, Limburg, Belgium. Each edition of Manifesta is specifically influenced by its location, both in terms of form and content. This also has a strong impact on how the design and visual styling change for each consecutive biennial. Accordingly, the overall look of Manifesta 9 will be very different to previous editions, adopting a new design to reflect some of the issues proposed by the curatorial team under the guidance of Cuauhtémoc Medina.
Thonik has developed a design proposal for Manifesta 9 which extends beyond the concept of a logo. Their proposal constitutes the idea of creating a new typeface inspired by the industrial architecture of those former mining sites where Manifesta 9 events will take place, and inspired by the cultural heritage of the host region. According to Thonik such a typeface should stylistically suit these post-industrial sites, but should also be able to go beyond the immediate historical associations. The design incorporates both monumental and unfinished elements – it is as bold as it is suggestive.
Thonik specializes in visual communication with a strong emphasis on graphic design. The designers combine an integrated strategic approach with high quality product and an adventurous exploration through a broad array of media. Clear concepts are often conveyed using minimum means. Thonik also displays an anarchistic side, regarding each project as a chance to experiment. Their recent clients include Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, the Venice Biennale of Architecture, the Dutch Socialist Party (SP), Amsterdam Public Library, VPRO (Dutch broadcasting agency) and the Spiral Art Center in Tokyo.
