OMA unveils “Palermo Atlas”: an urban study of Palermo commissioned by Manifesta 12

On the 1st of July 2017, Manifesta 12 unveiled “Palermo Atlas” by OMA. The event was held in the re-opened Teatro Garibaldi and presented by the Mayor of Palermo Leoluca Orlando, Director of Manifesta Hedwig Fijen, Manifesta 12 Creative Mediator Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli of OMA, Palermo Councilor of Culture Andrea Cusumano and Manifesta 12 Vice Chair Leonardo Di Franco.

Titled “Palermo Atlas”, the urban study is the foundational step of Manifesta 12, serving both as a blueprint for Palermo to plan its future and as a research framework to ensure that Manifesta 12 achieves a long-term impact for the city and its citizens. “Palermo Atlas” represents a novel creative mediation model proposed by Manifesta that focuses on transforming a nomadic art biennial into a sustainable platform for social change, rooted in holistic urban analysis and determined to leave a tangible legacy for every host city. It is the first time Manifesta appointed an architecture office to analyze the sociological, geographic and anthropological context of a host city prior to the biennial with the goal to provide outside expertise and new perspectives to the city.

The outcomes of the “Palermo Atlas” will be translated into a biennial program by a team of interdisciplinary and international creative mediators, including Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli of OMA; Bregtje van der Haak, Dutch journalist and filmmaker; Andrés Jaque, Spanish architect and scholar; and Mirjam Varadinis, Swiss contemporary art curator.

Manifesta, the European Nomadic Biennial, will open in Palermo on 15th of June 2018 with professional and press previews on 13th-14th of June 2018.

Teatro Garibaldi, an important cultural symbol of Palermo, was assigned to Manifesta 12 by the City of Palermo. Manifesta 12 will open the Teatro Garibaldi the public on the 13th of July with a pre-biennial cultural hub “Aspettando Manifesta 12”, including an archive exhibition of Manifesta’s previous editions, a cultural library, a pop-up cafe, film screenings and more for Palermitans to discover, pro-actively engage and share ideas with Manifesta 12.
