The path to commons consciousness in Palermo is very twisted, but no cultural initiative can develop successfully and meaningfully there without participating in social interactions and situating ourselves in relation to the community. Part of Manifesta 12 Community programme concentrated on the neighbourhood ZEN2, the area of artistic intervention of Manifesta 12 participants Gilles Clément and Coloco.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>ZEN (Zona Espansione Nord) is a social housing district located in the northern outskirts of Palermo, re-named San Filippo Neri in the nineties, and divided in two well-defined areas, ZEN1 and ZEN2. ZEN2 was constructed in 1969, designed by Italian architect Vittorio Gregotti. The project was inspired by the idea of the walled city and is organised in blocks of so-called insulas. The political situation between 1975 and 1980 disrupted the overall transformation of the neighbourhood and left ZEN2 without services and various infrastructure. Furthermore, due to an extreme housing shortage, squatting in these buildings became common. These factors created a complex social environment and resulted in the degradation of the area. \u003C\u002Fp>","\u003Cp>\u003Ci>Un Grande Giardino\u003C\u002Fi> is a community programme that accompanied the project \u003Ci>Becoming a Garden\u003C\u002Fi> by Gilles Clément and Coloco. The project was built around the creation of a community garden that transformed abandoned land into living space. This complex project has been considered to be a part of institutional responsibility of Manifesta, and not only the biennial participants. Anticipating this longer-term intervention, the education team, already active in the neighbourhood, initiated a programme of workshops in collaboration with Zen Insieme, the association located next to the abandoned field. The workshops and gatherings with the children and parents of the neighbourhood aimed at meeting each other, and introducing and appropriating Clement’s ideas of the planetary garden and then allowing them to take any transformation of the bus was a year-long collaborative process with the students of the University of Palermo and Academy of Fine Arts led by Madrid-based architectural bureau ENORME Therefore, the priority was given to returning to same places rather than planning more and more single stops. Upon the request of the associations, Manifesta 12 reached an agreement with the Municipality of Palermo and public transport company AMAT to keep the \u003Ci>Education Hub\u003C\u002Fi> at the disposal of non-profit organisations for educational and cultural projects. Unfortunately, despite all our efforts, the implementation of this agreement turned out to be more complicated than expected due to bureaucratic and administrative hurdles. It taught us that the legacy of Manifesta projects is not something that can be guaranteed, but very much depend on aspects of the local Two primary school classes conducted simultaneous campaigns of \"archaeology of the contemporary territory\" in two parts of the city – the southern beach of Romagnolo and a northern one of Vergine Maria. Despite being geographically afar, both neighbourhoods share a similar urban evolution in the years following the Second World War. Both have been changed from traditional fishermen neighborhoods into a sort of dysfunctional periphery. The hectic and unregulated growth of the city started in 1950s deprived Palermo of a recreation public space at the cost of the sea. spring 2018 the students of both schools excavated around 400 kilos of cement tiles, Venetian floors, grits, marble, majolica, terracotta and calcarenite bricks that belonged to demolished liberty villas and other constructions. These fragments of contemporary urban archeology, carefully sorted and analysed, formed an exhibition in the crypt of the church of SS. Euno and Giuliano.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Beyond the excavation work carried out by the participants, archeology in this project intended to uncover the stories and the trace of how the urban transformation led to the social change.
