pre-biennial research activities were set in motion, starting with an urban study named Le Grand Puzzle that aimed to decipher the possibilities and complexities of Marseille. The study was conducted by Winy Maas, MVRDV’s architect, and his team from The Why Factory. \u003Ci>Le Grand Puzzle\u003C\u002Fi> was a tool with which citizens could rethink the potential of their city and illustrated a path for a new, more accessible urban landscape.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Le Grand Puzzle became a departure point for \u003Ci>Le Tour de Tous les Possibles \u003C\u002Fi>a platform that aimed to increase citizen participation in democratic decision-making. Manifesta commissioned the project in order to include the richness of the diverse but often unheard voices of Marseille’s citizens in the biennial. \u003C\u002Fp>","\u003Cp>A series of fifteen experimental workshops took place from January to May 2020. Traits d’union aimed to create dialogue between two different worlds and to this end the programme worked with Marseille’s existing cultural institutions, symbolically as well as practically.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Proposed by the Education team of Manifesta 13, Le Tiers Programme included three projects: Invisible Archives, GROUP-THINK and Al Moutawassit, as well as a mediation programme in the main biennial venues.\u003C\u002Fp>","\u003Cp>At the core of Le Tiers Programme was the aim of including multiple stories and unrepresented narratives of the city’s common heritage, giving an insight into what Marseille is today and where its complexities come from. It studied stories of local resistance and community cooperation, extending the notion of mediation as an instrument for decentring knowledge production. Le Tiers Programme created space for visitors to the main biennial programme who wished to take more time to explore Marseille’s nuanced histories.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Every edition of Manifesta creates a synergy between the main programme of the biennial and so-called collateral events. In its 13th edition in Marseille, this programme was titled Les Parallèles du Sud. These events aimed to highlight the richness of the artistic and cultural regional scene and to strengthen the links between this local scene and the external world. Eighty-six projects were selected for Les Parallèles du Sud, which welcomed 350 participants in total (including 200 visual artists of whom half were based in the region).\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Manifesta 13 was open to the public from the 28th of August until the 29th of October 2020.
