Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Maya Watanabe's experiences growing up in Peru during a long-lasting conflict have deeply shaped her art. Themes of death, violence, memory, mourning and justice hold significant sway in her work, both in human interactions and beyond.
Her latest projects delve into the politics surrounding the portrayal of the irrepresentable, especially aiming to challenge conventional perceptions and representations of the dead. Through her work, she aims to enrich the visual dialogue surrounding death and mourning, expanding our collective understanding of these profound experiences, particularly when framed in relation to political violent forces.
