Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Materialisation in ex-Peterlini, Rovereto. Collection Museo Alt Tullio Leggeri Bergamo, Italy.
For the duration of the biennial, a former bus station called ex-Peterlini was declared a public space by Romanian artist Daniel Knorr. His decision to remove the doors and leave the space open 24 hours a day had a major impact on other artists, whose work was suddenly exposed and unguarded. The project tested the limits of a democratic space in a post-political landscape. Nothing was harmed or stolen.
