Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.
Familly Programme

Photo @ Manifesta 16 / Ruhr.
Families, accompanied by a mediator from Manifesta 16 team, are invited to discover the biennial through creative and playful experiences at St. Josef in Gelsenkirchen and Kulturkirche Liebfrauenkirche in Duisburg.
- Free Family Activity "Passing By", Kulturkirche Liebfrauen in Duisburg:
Using tape, fabric scraps, and markers, families are encouraged to create new objects from the gesture of “holding together”, an action used by some of the artists present at Kulturkirche Liebfrauen such as Emil Walde or Athina Koumparouli. The core gesture is simple: take pieces that don't belong together and make them into one new thing.
- Free Family Activity "Something Made of Air", St. Josef in Gelsenkirchen:
Using balloons, colourful foils, ribbons and light materials, families are invited to create temporary air-based objects inspired by Penique Productions’ inflatable installation at St. Josef Church. The objects may shimmer, move in the wind, change the view, or become small companions to take home. The core gesture is simple: give shape to air and see how it changes the space around you.
Recommended for families with children over the age of five.
