Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Colombian artist Alberto Baraya created a herbarium of artificial plants based on a taxonomy of Palermitan and Sicilian flora. These plants were gathered during indoor and outdoor expeditions around the city and across the island of Sicily, focusing on tributes and homages placed on altars made by local residents, visitors, migrants and travellers over time.
