Hedwig Fijen Recognised for Three Decades of Leadership

After more than three decades of leadership, Manifesta's Founding Director Hedwig Fijen will step down in October 2026. During the Opening Night of Manifesta 16 Ruhr at UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein on Saturday the 20th of June 2026, Mrs Fijen was honoured publicly in recognition of her outstanding achievement.

The Supervisory Board of Manifesta 16 Ruhr, Ina Brandes, Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, and Garrelt Duin, Regional Director of the Regionalverband Ruhr (RVR), are deeply grateful for what Hedwig Fijen has meant to Manifesta 16 Ruhr and to Manifesta over the past 30 years. They acknowledge her remarkable achievement in developing the European Nomadic Biennial into one of the world's most influential biennials, under challenging geopolitical conditions.
