Manifesta, the European Nomadic Biennial, relocates to a new city every two years. The 15th edition is the largest in the biennial's history, taking place in Barcelona and 11 neighbouring cities in the metropolitan region. It focuses on enhancing the relationship between urban and natural environments by integrating the city’s natural boundaries of the mountains, the rivers and the sea and exploring the interconnectedness of the region. Manifesta 15 investigates how artistic and urban interventions can act as a catalyst for the urgently needed socio-ecological transition.
Barcelona: Beyond the Walls presents an overview of these processes, methodologies and research that have formed Manifesta 15's decentralised approach to the region. It showcases a dynamic mixture of written and visual materials created by a diverse group of artists, urban planners, activists and others involved in the research and knowledge production of the pre-biennial process and in the creation of the conceptual framework of the biennial. This publication can inspire cities across Europe to rethink the roles of areas outside their historic centres.
