  • Communities & Education

    The Communities & Education Programme emerges from collaborative research with neighbourhood communities around the exhibition venues and works closely with artists, schools, museums, associations and other spaces.

    Manifesta 16 Ruhr explores alternative ways to bring diverse communities together and develop programmes that foster shared perspectives within the Ruhr Area. By working in churches that are no longer in use or abandoned, Manifesta 16 aims to collaboratively reimagine neighbourhoods, exploring new sustainable approaches that reflect the needs of local communities.

    The projects address a wide range of topics such as youth participation, empowerment, urban art and spaces for creative experimentation. Some projects present their outcomes during the biennial, while others are process-oriented and focus on exchange and shared experiences.

    During the summer break young people have the opportunity explore their creativity, learn new things, develop their own ideas and engage with local artists and collectives.

  • Mediation Programme

    The Mediation Programme brings people together to exchange ideas about culture and society. Visitors are invited to share thoughts, ask questions, and explore the different neighbourhoods around the venues. The programme offers free Open Walks, free activities for schools, a free participatory family programme and bookable Group Walks.

    In the context of Manifesta 16 Ruhr, mediation is seen as a practice that brings people together to exchange ideas about culture and society. Within different Walks and activities, mediators invite visitors to express their own thoughts, ask questions and encourage them to start conversation with each other. In these exchanges, visitors and mediators collectively engage with different artistic statements, sharing perspectives and experiences.

    All the activities in the Mediation Programme are organised by an interdisciplinary team of mediators from Manifesta 16 Ruhr.

    Manifesta 16 Ruhr: Open Walks and Group Walks

    In both Open Walks and Group Walks conversations unfold around art, neighbourhoods and the role of former churches in the Ruhr Area. The Open Walks are organised by an interdisciplinary team of mediators and are aimed at individuals.

- School Activity "Listening, Seeing, Transforming",Kulturkirche Liebfrauen in Duisburg
Students are invited to explore Kulturkirche Liebfrauen focusing on the artworks of Athina Koumparouli and Abbas Zahedi through all their senses. Following observation, sound experiments, and creative work with materials, they collaboratively investigate how sounds and materials can transform our perception of space.

- School Activity "Spaces of transformation - What else could this be?",St. Josef in Gelsenkirchen
Students explore St. Josef church by the observation of different artists' proposals, learning about different forms of spatial transformation and reinterpretation. Through observation, experimentation and group activities, they discover how spaces influence our perception, shared memories and our sense of community.
