Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.
Asimina Paradissa, GR

Untitled, 1965 – 1975. 18 b/w photographs.
Asimina Paradissa's photographic and poetic work is closely linked to the experience of migration and factory work. In the mid-1960s, she came to West Germany from Greece, first working in Wilhelmshaven and drafting her poems on an assembly line before writing them down later. Wuppertal became the central place of her life and work. Here she documents work, living and friendships from an inside perspective. The fact that Paradissa herself also appears in the picture – partly photographed by colleagues with their cameras – focuses on the migrant worker as an artistically active subject.
