Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Begzada Alatović heads the intercultural community garden Rosenduft at the non-profit organization Südost Europa Kultur e.V. and also works there as a language mediator and social worker. The garden arose from the encounter of Bosnian women with refugee experience with the neighbourhood and is now a meeting place for people from more than 12 nations. A central element is a rose from her family that has been passed down through generations. Her grandmother made rose syrup from it – a memory that Alatović brought back to Berlin in 2008. Today, the rose blooms once a year in the garden. With workshops focussing on environmental education, workshops and community gardening, Alatović creates a place for exchange, processing experiences and new forms of living together.
