Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Vlassis Caniaris was a post-war Greek artist who combined painting, sculpture and installation. In his work, he often used everyday objects, clothing, dolls and found materials to address politics, social inequality, migration and identity. His works are direct, visually powerful and human: they show how major social issues shape the lives of individuals. This made him an important voice in post-war Greek art.
