Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.
Abuzer Güler, TR

Auf dem Feld (In the Field), 1979. Oil on canvas 100 × 125 cm.
Abuzer Güler draws on a wide range of influences in his work, and this is clearly visible throughout his practice. He explores his own roots while also incorporating features from other cultural traditions.
Güler has identified a strong connection between Western abstract art and Islamic artistic traditions. He brings these together by combining the stylised abstraction of Islamic calligraphy with aspects of Abstract Expressionism. In doing so, he has developed a highly personal artistic language.
His recent work reflects a growing self-awareness, particularly in recognising the complexity of his own background and artistic development. At the same time, through his openness and sensitivity he successfully bridges Western and Eastern perspectives.
