Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Wilhelm Sasnal works primarily with painting, using photography as a point of departure to explore how images shape our memory and perception. Drawing on sources ranging from film and mass media to art history and everyday observation, he transforms familiar motifs through reduction, cropping and distortion. These gestures strip images of their original context and introduce moments of uncertainty and pause. Alongside painting, Sasnal also works with film, including short works shot on 8/16 mm and feature-length films made in collaboration with Anka Sasnal. Across both media, his practice engages with collective memory, historical trauma and popular culture, creating visual records shaped by social change and the circulation of images.
