Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.
Justin Lieberman, US

An Engine. Glazed ceramic 100 × 80 × 120 cm.
Justin Lieberman subverts and reframes images from the media and popular culture to challenge the hierarchical systems ingrained in modern culture. This kind of technique has long been used by Lieberman, and in earlier bodies of work it has been expressed through, to mention a few, the identifiable systems of advertising, furniture design, outsider art, home shopping television, art conservation, corporate franchises and taxonomy exhibitions. Lieberman modifies ready-made images and materials, such as newspaper clippings and ads, by painting, collaging and merging them in a distinctive manner influenced by ideas of excess and transgression. Lieberman prefers the handcrafted over the mass-produced.
