Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Sara Bichão’s work is driven by a deep interest in the meaningful use of materials and the inherent value they hold. Emotionally, it engages with channels like affective memory and processes of protection and healing. Her sculptures are intrinsically linked with the space they occupy. Although Bichão’s primary focus is sculpture, drawing plays a fundamental role in her creative process. Sara approaches drawing both structurally, from the outside, and in an inner-dimensional way, where vital axes and tensions mix and reveal layers of reality that wouldn’t emerge otherwise. For Bichão, it is about exploring an internal landscape rather than creating an image. Writing, too, is an extension of this, and often complements her projects.
