Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Judith Raum's paintings, installations and performances move between social and economic historical research, the critique of traditional power structures, the question what defines an artistic process. Her work is interdisciplinary.Looking closely at the artistic material in the studio and detailed archive research go hand in hand in her practice. In addition to economic colonial themes, several projects deal with the social and economic history of textile as a medium, traditional hierarchies between craftspersonship and the liberal arts, and traditional marginalisations of female design.
