Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.
Meine Mutter (My Mother), 1963. Graphite drawing 23 × 14.5 cm.
Yıldırım Denizli understands his art as an expression of liveliness, not as a product. Humour plays a central role for him – in the sense of Ludwig Wittgenstein, for whom humour is not a mood, but a worldview. He encounters his materials playfully and at eye level, in dialogue instead of in a gesture of mastery. For Denizli, human vitality always takes precedence over art itself.
