Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography.

Based on the social and physical environment from which they arise, Ayşe Erkmen’s projects intervene with existing structures and situations and place them into a new context, often creating ambiguous spaces by intertwining life and art. Erkmen’s site and situation specific interventions slightly re-route everyday spaces, objects, situations and relationships and often create a space in which the artwork can only be completed by the viewer or participant.
