Manifesta 17 to take place in Coimbra, Portugal in 2028

We’re thrilled to announce that the 17th edition of Manifesta, the European Nomadic Biennial, will take place in the historic city of Coimbra, Portugal in 2028.

Manifesta 17 Coimbra was officially announced today by Margarida Balseiro Lopes, Portugal’s Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports of Portugal, and is being developed in close partnership with the City of Coimbra, the University of Coimbra, the Portuguese Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and the Ministry of Tourism.

This upcoming edition will be an extraordinary edition, created in collaboration with Anozero – Coimbra's biennial, initiated by the Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra (CAPC), the Municipality of Coimbra and the University of Coimbra.

Set against the backdrop of the 13th-century University of Coimbra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city offers a unique setting rich in academic heritage, medieval history, and architectural brilliance. Coimbra has also long played a central role in the arts, with CAPC – Portugal’s oldest institution dedicated to contemporary art – at the heart of its cultural scene.

Manifesta 17 marks a milestone as the first edition of the biennial to take place in Portugal. A formal signing ceremony with all partners will be held in Coimbra in September 2025, officially launching this new chapter of collaborative artistic exploration.

Stay tuned as we begin this exciting journey together with Coimbra.
